Ape Gama
A Village Frozen in Time
Just a short drive from Waters Edge in Battaramulla, Ape Gama — meaning Our Village — is a lovingly recreated Sri Lankan village that feels worlds away from the city bustle. Originally known as the Battaramulla Janakala Kendraya, the entire site was thoughtfully revamped for the 2013 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, and what emerged is something truly special. Mud-walled houses wrapped in wattle, lifelike figurines captured mid-moment, manicured gardens, traditional industries, and a bird-watching zone and mini zoo all come together to paint a vivid portrait of how self-sufficient village life once thrived across the island. Every detail has been crafted with quiet precision — the simplicity itself is the story. It’s an easy, enriching outing that draws visitors week after week, and it’s no mystery why. Come curious, and leave with a deeper sense of the soul behind Sri Lanka’s smile.
